[...] “Skrypuch tells the story of the last Canadian airlift through the memories of one child, Son Thi Anh Tuyet. Nearly 8 years old, the sad-eyed girl on the cover had lived nearly all her life in a Catholic orphanage. With no warning, she and a number of the institution babies were taken away, placed on an airplane and flown to a new world. Tuyet’s memories provide poignant, specific details….In an afterword, the author describes her research, including personal interviews and newspaper accounts from the time. But Tuyet’s experience is her focus.
Jennifer's best friend Amanda has been murdered. The murderer surgically removed four fingers. Jennifer was a noted hand surgeon before she retired.
Jennifer has Alzheimers. This alone makes for a fascinating reading - did she do it or did she not ? The books is written as a series of enteries in Jennifer's daily journal. A journal in which her care-giver and her son and daughter also make entries. These entries are to assist Jennifer's 'rememberance'. Jennifer goes back over the events of her marriage, the raising of two children, and her friendship with Amanda. There are many revelations along the way, and always open questions. Definitely keeps one reading ! Well written, well plotted. I couldn't put it down. Read it one sitting. Just had to know what happened between Jennifer and Amanda. And what happens to Jennifer.

Wow, how lucky were YOU to get to take a class with her! Was that when she was working on her MFA? Or was she already done? And how very small world indeed!

I can't find any information about any upcoming titles. I found some references to a couple of short stories which may or may not be new (they weren't in Tropical Fish, but I couldn't tell if they were written recently or awhile back) online, but nothing more. I hope she's working on something to publish SOON. No patience!!

No direct line, and I still haven't read this collection in toto, but I did, once upon a time as a young undergrad, take a fiction workshop with Doreen at UMD. Her success is much deserved, and the work, even in its early stages, was very powerful and carefully wrought. Happy to see the review, and, like you, wishing for more good things for and from Doreen.

His points number 2-4 really hit home with me. I have seen evidence of the effects of these in two of my nephews. One being 22 and the other 14. The amount of time they spent over the years locked in their rooms playing video games has surely had a negative impact. With the advent of playing online with kids all over the world there is no longer a need to go out and spend time with actual friends. In my opinion that is a serious social issue.
