The story of a group of young, idealistic friends in Japanese-occupied Shanghai in 1945. Caught between an ancient culture overwhelmed by Western colonialism, each of the friends must try and find his or her own individual place in a society intolerant of its mixed-race citizens.
Like her characters, Chang is also of mixed race – she was born in New York to a Chinese father and Eurasian mother. She spent a portion of her childhood in Beijing before returning permanently to the U.S. Although this work is set outside the U.S., it is lauded as one of the first Asian American novels ever published.
